When we talk about “longevity,”what we are really referring to is a delaying of the aging process. Aging is an unavoidable process of nature, but we now know that the rate of its development is variable. This has become a huge business in America to the tune of $42 billion. WOW! Especially with all the baby boomers getting older, they are looking for ways to stay young.
We have all noticed that people are living longer more fruitful lives. This is due to a combination of factors: lowered infant mortality rates, elimination of certain diseases and epidemics, and better treatments.
There are many theories to why and how the body ages and at what speed. Here are the biggest theories:
1. Telomeric Shortening
2. Free Radical Damage
3. Inflammation
4. Hormonal Decline
Telomeric Shortening: This theory is about the reproduction of the cells. Our body is made up of around 50 to 70 trillion cells that all interact with each other. These cells all have a lifespan and recreate themselves based on their genetic coding. For example, our liver cells last the longest, reproducing every two years. However, our heart cells divide (mitosis) every 40 to 45 days. So you have a new heart every 2 months, crazy! The actual telomeres protect our cells during this division. With each division the telomeres become a little shorter and get damaged, which results in DNA damage, which ultimately leads to aging. The best way to prevent this is proper supplementation with a multivitamin that protects and repairs DNA. Sound impossible, we found it….email us
Free Radical Damage: Free radicals are unstable molecules created in our bodies from oxygen consumption and the metabolism of fasts, carbs, and proteins. Each cell will produce around 2 to 3 billion free radicals per day. When you look above and see how many cells we have, holy crap that a lot of radicals. An easy way to understand this is rusting. This is like your body rusting.
There are two sources of free radicals:
endogenous: inside the body, byproduct of metabolism
exogenous: outside the body, pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, processed foods, and lots of alcohol
How to protect yourself:
prevention: don’t smoke, don’t eat like crap,
enzymatic anti-oxidants: enzymes located in our cells and tied to genetics, take multivitamins that repair DNA
chain-breaking anti-oxidants: take a good vitamin and antioxidant supplement, eat lots of veggies
Inflammation: This is one of the key processes of the development of degenerative diseases and the aging process and occurs at cellular level. When our cells get sick, we get sick. However, inflammation is also the agent used to protect ourself and used as immune system. Free radicals are actually a major cause of inflammation so read above but also the following will cause free radicals and inflammation:
- stress
- cigarette smoke
- over exposure to radiation
- exposure to drugs and chemicals
- trans fats and processed foods
- elevated blood sugar
- excess weight, especially around the stomach
- nutritional deficiencies, like vitamin D
- nutritional excesses, like iron
- sleep deprivation

Hormonal Changes: As we age our bodies stops producing its natural hormones. The ones that make us little girls and boys and help us move on to puberty. Here are some fo the hormones and what they do:
- DECLINING
- DHEA, building block for estrogen and testosterone, also boost immunity and brain function
- Estrogen, Testosterone, sex hormones, build muscle and connective tissue
- Human Growth Hormone, longevity hormone, anabolic effects of body, helps with regeneration
- INCREASING
- Insulin, high levels leads to resistance by our cells, which may lead to Adult onset diabetes diabetesII
- Cotisol, stress hormone and elevated levels lead to weight gain, lowered metabolic rate, and lower immunity
